Spearfishing 'NIUE' | Dogtooth tuna, Mahi, Wahoo and more | PART 1
Just back from a short trip to the island of NIUE, which is a small island located in the pacific ocean. Crystal clear water, home to many great species such as Dogtooth Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Job fish and more. This tropical paradise is a short easy getaway, with a 3 hour flight from New Zealand. It provides sensational diving and opportunities at great pelagic fish. We used BJ at "Fish Niue" for charter trips and were blessed with great service and knowledge of the area.

But at the end of the days we head out of the zones to shoot some fish for dinner and sight in our spearguns. We had some great spearfishing including Snapper, Kingfish, Joh...

      Thank you. We stayed in an air bnb near the wharf (Anakule), which would work well with the family. Very comfortable and walking proximity to town and the main wharf, across the road from the water. Depending on what the family would want to do, it would be a good option. Otherwise the main resort. Make sure to get a rental car and have a great time!

      thank you very much, is it safe for the kids to snorkel with the snakes around near the reef?

    • @WettieNZ
      @WettieNZ 6 днів тому

      @@adran5916 Yes, the sea snakes in theory are only capable of biting the webbing between fingers and toes (due to size of mouth). Not to mention they don't tend to be aggressive just inquisitive.

    We also did a trip to niue recently with BJ, and found much the same as what you guys encountered. Plenty of dogtooth around that 10-15kg mark almost every 2nd or 3rd drop. Biggest we got was 27kg but not a lot of huge fish around. The few fish we seen at the fads were also very cagey and super hard to get close to. Tons of big sharks at the fads too which was nerve wracking once the chum got them up to the surface It definitely takes a few hard learnings to get used to the blue water, we missed some rather huge wahoo, and by the time you get the hang of it it’s time to go home haha. Had a Such a wicked place

    Beautiful diving. You provide great narration. Why not shoot the giant grouper?

    • @WettieNZ
      @WettieNZ 13 днів тому

      Large grouper (Queensland/Bumble bee Grouper) like these are not always targeted due to them being protected in lots of places in the world (wide spread species with many names). Along with being very prone to ciguatera (a virus that is very dangerous through consumption of certain fish).

      Fish Aggregating Device. Can come in many forms. But commonly anchored floats or floating contraption (doesn't have to be anchored) that is out in deep water often 300m to 1000m deep. Fish tend to aggregate around these as a reference point and create a food chain effect.

    I noticed that you have a nylon shooting line that’s attached to the reel line. I normally just use the dyneema. What’s the reasoning behind your setup? I’m sure you have some method to your system 😊Cheers, from the 11C South Island

      Mono tends to shoot far quicker and with better accuracy then Dyneema. Not as good abrasion wise but better overall for shooting with.

    I actually came up with the idea 20 years ago so you don’t have to pay for extra luggage while travelling. I like spear gun over 2 meters. I believe the longer the gun the less you miss to kill a fish. 3 meters is my dream gun. For a Aitutaki Cook Islander

    I love how you guys use super simple guns. Not necessarily a comment about the travel guns but your normal railgun setup with one band. Idk it just speaks volumes about how people tend to overcomolicate equipment imo

      Sometimes simplicity is best! Lower profile makes aiming easier, single 16mm rubber results in low recoil and good shaft speed.

    Can you do a video on how to find the offshore locations? I live in a foreign country and have a small boat. It’s great fun but short of seeing other boats in certain areas I’m really clueless on scouting spots. Is it just word of mouth or do you guys have techniques using a sounder to find offshore spots?

    • @WettieNZ
      @WettieNZ 2 місяці тому

      It pays to spend plenty of time in the water swimming and diving. Then you can cover plenty of ground to find fishy spots. Look for changes in the bottom structure, often fish like hanging around gradient and composition changes in the bottom.
